Find the amount you need invested today so compound growth alone reaches your FI number by your chosen retirement age, with no more contributions.
The amount you'd need invested at each age to coast to 60.
How Coast FIRE is calculated
Coast number = FI number ÷ (1 + r)^years. Your FI number is spending ÷ withdrawal rate. The line chart shows how the coast number rises each year as there's less time left to compound.
Frequently asked questions
What is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE means you have invested enough that, with no further contributions, compounding alone will grow your portfolio to your FI number by your target retirement age. You still need to earn enough to cover today’s spending, but you can stop saving.
How do I calculate my Coast FI number?
Coast FI number = FI number ÷ (1 + real return)^(years until retirement). With $50,000 of spending (a $1.25M FI number), 30 years to go and a 5% real return, you need about $289,000 invested today.
